Virginia University of Lynchburg (VUL) Athletics capped off an exciting Fall marked by historic victories, competitive growth, and outstanding academic achievement across its athletic programs.
The VUL Dragons Football team
VUL Football delivered its most successful season in four years, finishing 3–7 and demonstrating resilience, toughness, and upward momentum. One of the season’s most thrilling moments came on the road in West Virginia, where the Dragons stunned Bluefield University in a dramatic 43–42 upset victory. The game, delayed by more than four hours due to weather, showcased the Dragons’ grit and determination under challenging conditions.
VUL continued its strong play at home with two dominant wins. In the home opener on September 13, the Dragons made history with a 56–0 victory over Barber-Scotia College, marking Barber-Scotia’s first-ever HBCU football game. The excitement carried into Homecoming at Lynchburg City Stadium on October 2, where VUL thrilled fans with a commanding 55–12 win over South Carolina Central Christian College.
The Dragons were invited to the HBCU YES Classic Bowl in the U.S. Virgin Islands, highlighting the program’s growing national recognition. In a hard-fought contest, VUL led late before Fort Lauderdale completed a 95-yard drive in the final minutes to narrowly secure the win. Despite the result, the Dragons proved they could compete on a big stage. VUL also battled Roanoke College in the Maroons’ first-ever football game, showing competitiveness and promise throughout the season. With three wins, including back-to-back victories, the future of VUL Football is bright with a talented core of young players.
VUL Men’s Basketball entered a new chapter with the hiring of Head Coach Kevin Johnson. The Dragons return standout two-sport athlete Jacob Newman (PG), who earned First Team NCCAA All–South Region honors. Newman, along with Derek Todd, Jr., leads the team in scoring as the program continues to build toward its first win of the season and long-term success.
VUL Women’s Basketball, led by new Head Coach Pam Walker, has been highly competitive. The Lady Dragons pushed CIAA favorite Lincoln University (PA) to the limit in a close home contest, falling by just six points. VUL features two of the top scorers in the NCCAA this season in Lovely Tua Link and DaNiya McClure, positioning the program as a rising contender.
Equally impressive was the department’s commitment to academic excellence. This year:
-
Five student-athletes earned a perfect 4.0 GPA
-
Forty-five student-athletes achieved a 3.0 GPA or higher
With continued growth in competition and strong academic performance, VUL Athletics looks ahead to an exciting Spring season filled with opportunity, progress, and Dragon pride.
Beyond wins and statistics, the Fall season was marked by a powerful spiritual impact. Through the grace of God, 25 VUL football student-athletes gave their lives to Christ in 2025, with 12 being baptized in holy water. This profound moment stands as a true testament to faith, purpose, and transformation within the program. All glory to God.
