The Dragons stormed into Columbia, SC on Saturday, November 1st, ready to face a fierce challenge: a Homecoming showdown against the nationally ranked #21 Benedict College Tigers. The atmosphere was electric, the stakes were high, and the Dragons—young, hungry, and unshaken—came to fight.
From the opening whistle, Benedict came out blazing, putting up 14 quick points on their first two drives. But the Dragons didn’t flinch. As the defense began to find its rhythm in the second quarter, the tide started to turn. Defensive standouts Antonio Adams and Shane Ferguson delivered back-to-back interceptions, halting the Tigers’ momentum and injecting life into the Dragons’ sideline.
Then came the drive of the night—a 95-yard march down the field just before halftime. Junior running back Jacob Newman and star wideout Montrell Wright took over, carving through the Tigers’ #14-ranked defense. Wright made clutch grabs to move the chains, and Newman capped it off with a bruising 1-yard touchdown plunge to cut the deficit to 21-7 at the break.
The Dragons came out of halftime with fire. Coach Danny Farley dialed up a masterful 76-yard drive, ending in a booming 40-yard field goal from Jacob Briggeman to make it 21-10. Special teams were lights out, with Briggeman and the punt unit delivering standout performances.
But experience matters—and Benedict’s depth and discipline began to show. The Tigers leaned on their veteran offense, gradually wearing down the Dragons’ youthful defense and pulling away to a 42-10 final.
Despite the score, the Dragons showed flashes of brilliance and the kind of heart that can’t be taught. Jacob Newman’s 89 yards on 20 carries and Montrell Wright’s 95 receiving yards on five catches proved that this team has stars in the making.
Now sitting at 3-7, the Dragons hit the road again next week for a tough matchup against Sacred Heart in Connecticut. With a roster full of young talent and a coach who believes in the future, the foundation is being laid for something special. Coach Newman remains confident: “This team is growing every week. The future is bright.”
